Coskran Volunteer Award
Celebrating the spirit of volunteerism
These annual awards honor and recognize volunteers throughout the school district who give of themselves to enhance our students’ educational experiences, and/or demonstrate the importance of community service.
Individuals and groups involved in One91 including parents, community members, students, and staff are all eligible to receive this award. Nominations may be submitted by any group or individual affected by the District 191 volunteer program. Persons may be nominated in more than one category and in more than one year.
AWARD HISTORY
A long-time advocate for volunteerism, John Coskran served 34 years at Catholic Charities and retired as associate director in 1993. One of his most impressive accomplishments during his years there was to develop a volunteer services program. The program began in the mid-1960’s with fewer than a dozen volunteers and grew to more than 8500 by 1993:
“Volunteers can do anything,” John explains. “If you accept and respect what they do, and treat them on a par, they will spring up and develop themselves –and they will recruit others.”
In 1979, John carried his passion for serving others and encouraging volunteerism to his work on the Burnsville/Eagan/Savage School Board. In 2001, the Board of Education recommended the creation of the John Coskran Volunteer Awards to honor John’s unending support of seeking ways to expand the volunteer program to benefit students within District 191.
